Taman Negara (National Park) Trip

Back to nature!.......I went to Taman Negara Pahang last month from 1st to 3rd October 2014 with my friends. This is my first trip to Taman Negara. Taman Negara National Park covers 4 areas of Malaysia, Pahang, Kelantan Perak and Terengganu. The rainforest has been recorded to be 136 million years old and is the oldest tropical rainforest on the planet as it was not affected by an ice age and has no volcano activity nearby. It’s taking about 6 hours driving from Kuala Lumpur to Taman Negara.

On the way there we stop by at Deerland Park and Elephant Sanctuary at Kuala Gandah. At first I didn’t know that Deerland Park is existed. On the way to Kuala Gandah my friend told me about Deerland Park and suggested to visit there before we visit Elephant Sanctuary. Deearland Park is a great place to visit. A trip to this petting park is an opportunity for animal lovers to get up-close and personal with deers as well as a variety of animals such as Golden Phesant, Bengal Cat, Rabbits, Parakeets, Phytons and few others. Deerland Park opens daily (except Friday from 10.30 am to 5.30pm)

Then we visited elephant sanctuary. The sanctuary is just few kilometres from Deerland Park. The elephant sanctuary was established in 1989 within the Krau Wildlife Reserve, and is managed by the Malaysian Department of Wildlife and National Parks. Here many orphaned elephants are raised and given shelter. Activities at elephant sanctuary only start at 2pm daily. Here you can interacts with elephants and feed them. It was a great experience for me..

Some of elephants show their talent to us!

We continued our journey from Kuala Gandah to Taman Negara and arrived around 6.00pm. Having our dinner at a floating restaurant and then we took river taxi with RM1 fare each person to cross the Tembling River to our resort at Mutiara Taman Negara. Here, we are staying in a wooden cabin about a mile out of the main spot for entering the park which is really peaceful, the only noise we get is of the surrounding jungle. The cabin is nice and clean. We take a rest for a while before we start first activity at TamanNegara.

Our first activity is jungle night walk. The activity started at 8pm. The jungle night walk is a good way to experience night life in the rainforest when the nocturnal animals come out to feed. It's not an activity to see big animals but rather small ones like insects, spiders, scorpions, and many others. The walk starts at an entry point into the jungle where the Mutiara Resort boundary ends. Armed with only our torches, we walked into the jungle following a wide path while being led by our experienced guide.  The night walk ends with a visit to the Tahan Hide (located within the proximity of the Mutiara Resort) which faces a natural salt lick. Animals normally come out at night to take a sip at salt licks. Unfortunately that night we have no luck to see any animal to take a sip at salt licks.

The next day we went to canopy walk. The canopy walk was about 500 meters long and 60 meters high above the forest floor and had magnificent views of the surrounding rainforest and the Tembling River. I enjoyed the views through gallons of sweat pouring from my head, whilst clinging onto the canopy swaying from side to side. After went down from canopy walk, we went on a long hike up to 448-meter-high Bukit Teresek.  The whole hike including getting to the canopy walk was about 2km roundtrip and took about 45 mins. After canopy walk I recommend to hike up Bukit Teresek (this recommendation only for those who like hiking..hehehe). It is very long with lots of stairs (around 300 meters vertical) and the views are ok but are about as good as the canopy walk.

We also went on a boat trip to rapid shooting along Sungai Tahan, which basically means you go thrashing into a rapid head first in a thin river boat and get absolutely drenched! good fun!. This journey on Sungai Tahan takes about 1 hour depending on water level.  The boat ride was cool because the trees' branches created a dense tunnel, the trees were really tall, about 25 feet high, some of tallest trees I've seen because they are old growth, around 136 million years old tropical rainforest.

Third day, it’s time to going back. I and my friend choose boat as our  transportation back from Kuala Tahan to Kuala Tembeling jetty. The journey takes about 2 hours in a long boat. Shortly after leave the junction at Kuala Tahan, we are left to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery with just hum of the boat and the cries of birds breaking the silence. We are lucky because we saw some water buffalo along the way.

It was a great experience for me and my friends. To those who love nature, Taman Negara is the best place for you to enjoy and appreciate the nature..

Gracias!..:)
